Nobody calls a colleague they were only introduced to.

Nobody calls a colleague they were only introduced to.

You cannot put trust on an agenda. You have to put people in the same boat.

A company brought its entire European sales force together, 1,200 people. It runs as seven separate platforms, each with its own specialists, and for four and a half days it taught them to sell for one another: to recognise an opening outside their own platform and bring in the colleague who can close it. All of which depends on being willing to make the call. So the last day was ours.
One resort, a quarter of a million square metres. We built 18 activities in its grounds, all running at once, and everyone chose four. A slalom relay run with wine barrels. Archery. Water polo played from inflatable boats. Mosaics made by hand. A boat built from nothing, then raced. Each had its own manager, crew, flow plan and scoring, and all 18 ran on one clock and one score. A crew of 70, from six countries, held it together in radio contact, and every activity had a plan B and a plan C written before anybody arrived, because with 1,200 people rotating through 18 activities, one late start is every late start.

At the gala dinner the company’s Vice President told the room it was the most complex operation he had seen in all his years there, and the best.

A basketball club had just rebuilt its roster. Twenty of them, players, coaches and management, spent a day competing on a beach with nothing at stake. They went back to it all season. They won the cup.

A technology distributor wanted its dealers closer to their own customers. It brought its 20 best in Europe, trained them for two days, then flew in the people they sell to. In the morning they were customers. In the afternoon they were on the same team. Then it was morning again. Three days of it.

A works World Rally Championship team came to Cyprus a week before the rally. We sent the drivers and their mechanics into a forest with compasses to find the parts of the mountain bikes they would then build and race.

A call to somebody you rowed with is not the same call.

A sales conference that needs a last day. Departments that should be working together and have never met. An annual offsite, a leadership retreat, or an afternoon that has to do more than fill an afternoon. From a single department to an entire sales force.

Tell us who is coming and what has to be different afterwards, and we’ll come back with something worth reading.
