The best venues are the ones that were not venues.

The best venues are the ones that were not venues.

Guests arrive expecting a room and walk into something that has never existed and will not exist again. That only works if everything underneath the theme is real.

A client wanted a Christmas party for 800. We found the space first, a run-down fruit-packing factory, and proposed the theme afterwards. Then we went to Her Majesty’s Theatre in the West End to look at the Phantom of the Opera properly, detail by detail, and came back with what could be done.
56 wireless lights went into the olive trees along the drive, from the gate to the door. Inside, a red carpet and a place to be photographed on it, a cloakroom, a cocktail area, and 1,300 square metres of dining and dancing, with the kitchens and the receiving bay behind. Every wall of it was covered in custom-made black velvet. 16 chandeliers hung at the edges, low and close over the guests, which is where the one in London hangs: between the stage and the front row. An 80 square metre video wall stood behind the stage. A soprano was flown in to sing the title song.

What nobody saw: heating installed throughout a building that had none, and high-end mobile restrooms brought in and plumbed for 800. A safety company worked through every hazard the building could produce, and the manual written from it set out what to prevent, what to do, and who does it. Six of the crew held first aid certificates, and each of them knew which part of the room was theirs before the doors opened. A doctor, paramedics and an ambulance were on site all night.

The next morning it was a fruit-packing factory again.

Others we have built

An ancient Greek night at the temple of Aphrodite. Fire eaters, living statues, and the permission of the Department of Antiquities for all of it.

Alice in Wonderland, built through the whole conference centre of a five-star hotel, from the way in to the table settings. The client asked us to do it again in Athens.

A cruise, for a maritime company’s 25th year, in a building above Limassol port. Guests came aboard with boarding passes, drank on the upper deck, and went down to dinner in a windowless lift that had been given a view of the harbour.

A Christmas party. A milestone anniversary, a product launch, an awards night, or an evening somewhere nobody would call a venue. A hotel ballroom that needs to stop looking like a hotel ballroom.

Tell us what you want them to walk into, and we’ll come back with something worth reading.
